Has anyone noticed more and more blinking CHMSL’s when cars are braking? I used to see it on city buses, and in obvious aftermarket applications.
Now I’m seeing it on brand new Civics and Subarus, but not all of them it seems. Is it an option? Is it a setting than can be turned on and off?

What is a CHhmhmshghsmhtsl?

Center high mounted stop light (Third brake light)
Otherwise known as the thing that drives me insane when Turn 10 doesn’t model it correctly in some cars.

Its an aftermarket kit suppliers coerce dealers into installing. Says it makes the cars “safer”.
Here’s the kits we used to install:

Yeah, I’ve noticed this more on new cars too. It’s mildly annoying

I fucking hate these things and it makes me think that the car in front of me is either malfunctioning or is an under-cover ambulance.

CHMSL?
Cheese Missile. It’s for when you need to liberate the communists with the finest of Vermont Cheddar.

My understanding is a lot of new cars do it only under hard/emergency braking. Maybe you’re just seeing it in these situations?

I’ll take delivery of some of that sweet, nutty Swiss neutrality please.

No problem. I can also drop a daisy cutter full of ham and MIRV filled with yellow mustard.
Bread’s on you though.

Thanks! I know somebody would know.

It is mildly annoying. I don’t generally mind it unless you get stuck behind one in stop-and-go traffic, especially if it’s dark (and rainy) outside, then this thing just emits glaring blinks repeatedly.
It’d be nice if it only activated under heavy braking, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

That would be ideal, and I’ve heard of that. These current ones blink with every touch of the pedal. I’ve been behind them in traffic.

I’ve been seeing them more and more and I like them! Most recently saw it on a Maxima.

The Maxima itself is a bit of a unicorn.

They always seem to be on cars where the driver can’t go ten seconds without hitting the brake pedal even in clear traffic.
More annoying, I’m seeing cars lately with blinking fourth brake lights (hitch-mounted, or mounted where a hitch would be) and this irritates me to no end at night because it really screws with my perception before I realize what’s going on.

10 years ago, I saw them all over Fords and Mazdas. I figured it was a FoMoCo thing.
I haven’t seen one in a long time, but now that you’ve said something I’m sure I’ll see 10 of them tonight.

Yep, to the first part.
As to the second part, that’s what I was referring to by obvious aftermarket setups.

If you’re noticing them, then they’re doing their job. That’s the point. Ever been behind somebody with non-functioning tail lights? I find that way more annoying. Its surprisingly more difficult to keep a safe and reasonable distance.

I notice regular CHMSL’s too, and burnt out ones, and ones where one or two LED’s is burnt out. I’m not rear ending things with non-blinking CHMSL’s.
Yes, cars with no brake lights are annoying also.

“One pedal is for go! The other pedal is for Stop!”
Too many folks have never heard of coasting..

At night those always initially appear to be a squashed bicycle or something before my brain can translate.

Came here to say this but the always knowledgeable Takuro beat me to it. It’s a way for dealers to make some extra money, they install it on all of their cars but don’t quote it in their prices, it’s just a surprise add on. I really hate them btw, they make me think somebody is just tapping their brakes when in reality they could be coming to a full stop, that extra half second to figure it out could make a big difference.
